I - 'Exercise "Medflex Able" 28 March - 1 April 1954 Allied Forces Mediterranean' - Exercise takes place off Gibraltar. Admiral Mountbatten leads meeting on HMS Glasgow. Avengers, Skyraiders, Attackers and Sea Hawks from 800 Royal Naval Air Squadron take off and land on carrier USS Essex. One crash landing by Lt Ken Mitchell. II - 'Exercise "Medflex Baker" 15 - 24 July 1954 Allied Forces Mediterranean' - Exercise at Malta George Cross, Headquarters Allied Forces Mediterranean. Navies of Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Great Britain and the United States meet at RAF El Adem (Libya). Shackletons provide air support. Royal Marines land from amphibious craft at Mellieha Bay. NATO officials and Secretary General Lord Ismay visit Headquarters at Luqa. Naval chiefs meet at Action Speed Tactical Teacher school. They include Rear Admiral Zepos and Vice Admiral Fife, Deputy C-in-C Allied Forces Mediterranean, Duncan Sandys and Lord Mountbatten. Demonstration on HMS Surprise. III - 'Exercise "Keystone" 1 - 5 September 1954 Comlandsoutheast Allied Forces Southern Europe'. Exercise at Izmir, Turkey, Headquarters of Allied Forces South Eastern Europe. Present are Lt Gen Paul Kendall and Admiral William Fechteler. Turkey, Greece and France taking part. Greek pilots of F84 Thunder Jets from Eleusis. Simulated atomic attacks by 28th Tactical Air Force, plus crossing the River Strymon with 706 Combat Engineer Battalion of Greek Army and 6th Infantry Division. Second Phase in West Turkey. Brig Gen Homer Litzenberg. IV - 'Exercise "Indian Summer" 22-26 September 1954 US Zone Germany' - 5th Corps Headquarters 7th US Army. Present Gen Alfred M Grunther, Supreme Allied Commander Europe. 1st French Armoured Division led by Major General André De Metz. Taking part are US 1st and 4th Infantry Divisions, 2nd Armoured Division, 14th Armoured Cavalry Regiment, elements of US 12th Air Force, French units from 4th Allied Tactical Air Force and elements of US 5th Corps. Convoy includes 280mm atomic cannon. V - 'Exercise "Polar Mist" "Blatind" Maneuver 17 - 30 September 1954 Comlandnorway Allied Forces Northern Europe' - Infantry exercise in north Norway. Part of Exercise Morning Mist in Troms County, Norway. VI - 'Exercise "Skandaek Mist" 25 - 30 September 1954 Comlandenmark Allied Forces Northern Europe' - Part of Exercise Morning Mist involving Infantry, Home Guard and air forces in Jutland, Denmark. VII - 'Exercise "Battle Royal" 22 - 28 September 1954 British Zone Germany' - Westphalia. Present Field Marshal Sir John Harding, General Alfred M Gruenther, General Sir Richard Gale, Army Director of the exercise plus former high ranking German general staff officers. Involved 6 Divisions and Brigade Groups of 2nd Allied Tactical Air Force, 4th Dutch Infantry Division and 6th British Armoured Brigade plus Belgian and Canadian Divisions and British Parachute Group. Exercise includes firing of 280 mm atomic cannon with mushroom cloud. "Symbolised in the atomic mushroom burst delivered by gun or plane is the significant strength of the peoples allied for peace under the North Atlantic Treaty."
